How to Stand Up to Your Inner Mean Girl

Posted by: Amy | Comments (4)

“You don’t deserve it.”

“Who do you think you are?”

“This will never work out for you, you know that, right?”

Recognize that voice? It’s the voice of your Inner Mean Girl.

She’s negative. She’s catty. She’s judgmental.

She compares your worst to everyone else’s best – in her eyes, you lose every time.

She spews cruel words at you and makes you feel like you are in 7th grade again. Your Inner Mean Girl’s favorite thing to do is to make you feel small, inadequate, and unworthy. She’s always finding evidence to prove her theory: you are not enough.

It’s time to stop letting her run the show!

Try the three steps below to stand up to your Inner Mean Girl once and for all:

• Identify your Inner Mean Girl’s Top 10 List of places, situations and environments where she likes to show up and criticize. Is it at work? Social events? In bed? Whenever you look in the mirror? Once you know what circumstances are likely to trigger her, you can be better prepared to deal with her.

• Next, draw a picture of your Inner Mean Girl. Is she fat with big glasses? Perfectly pressed and all in pink? A slob with a cigarette in one hand and a martini in the other? Don’t worry if you think you can’t draw – no one will ever see this but you, so go for it! And if you really don’t want to draw, can you find an image in a magazine or on the Internet that captures your Inner Mean Girl? It’s important that you have a clear mental image of that voice that tortures you.

• Get to know your Inner Mean Girl. Notice what makes her happy and notice what makes her power diminish. What happens if you just yell “Shut up!” at her? What if you just look her calmly in the eye and reassure her that everything is going to be all right? Maybe she needs a compliment every now and then? After all, Inner Mean Girls need love, too.

I’ve got news for you: your Inner Mean Girl is a liar.

She tells you big fat lies to try to maintain the status quo and keep you in your comfort zones. Even if your comfort zones aren’t all that comfortable. For example, poor body image, constant financial distress or any kind of addictive behavior can be an area where your Inner Mean Girl thrives. She will tell you over and over again that “you can’t change,” and “you’re a loser.”

But that’s a lie. You can change and you are certainly not a loser. In fact, you are magnificent.

Once you realize that she is a liar, see if you can’t catch her lying to you. (Hint: whenever you’re feeling bad about yourself, she’s probably right there with a megaphone.)

Then do this simple three-step process to see through your Inner Mean Girl’s lies:

• What is my Inner Mean Girl saying? Write it down. Can you identify the lies?

• What does my higher self/inner wisdom believe? Write it down. Can you see the truth? (Hint: it helps to sometimes close your eyes and take a deep breath before asking this question. The truth is always there, waiting to set you free.)

• Now write down an action you want to take in light of this new information. Is there something or someone you need to commit to? Something you must stop doing? A new perspective you will hold? Do you need to forgive yourself or someone else?

Here is the truth: your Inner Mean Girl is really a voice of insecurity and anxiety. Uncertain of her own power, she becomes a bully. Once you start really listening and writing down her rants and accusations, it’s easy to put her in her place.

The truth is, you are fabulous.

And I know, because my Inner Wisdom told me so.

Oh What A Beautiful Morning…

My niece, Ellie, embodying Spring!

My niece, Ellie, embodying Spring!

I woke up today and the sun is shining brightly. My baby girl is singing and happy–she is loving all the new words she is saying. Getting ready to coach a fantastic client. Life is good.

And there are things in the background…the background music…that I could easily turn my focus to that will cause me angst. Get me moving in he OTHER direction today. The sad, mad, angry direction. Why would I want to cause myself that suffering? It can be addictive–that temptation to gnaw on the bone of negativity. It can always be justified.

For now, for today, for this moment, I am choosing to be grateful. Choosing to look at what is working and thriving in my life. Life is short. Choose to be happy.

Happy Monday!

We just finished up call number four in The Women Masters free twelve week series. Yes, we’re a third of the way through this inspiring series. I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the biggest take-aways from the first four calls and remind you of the some free gifts you can receive from each master.

Call #4

Yesterday’s call with Marcia Wieder on Create Your Future NOW—Despite the State of the World was unbelievable. She packed in more value in one hour than most do in a full weekend workshop. I got emails during the call saying things like, “WOW. Oh my god, another amazing call…this is such valuable information. I love this series!!!!” (Click here for more testimonials for The Women Masters).

One of the biggest take-aways from the call: Do you believe more in your dreamer or your doubter? Go public with your dream and take one inspiring action this week.

Make sure to sign up for Marcia’s 10 free ebooks at: www.dreamcoach.com/gift

Call #3

Going Green call with Linda Sivertsen was filled with insight. I learned so much incredible information and I left the call feeling empowered to create clean air inside my home (did you know that the air quality inside your home is likely MORE polluted than the air outside?). She gave us tips that will change the way you think about air, food, and more.

One of the biggest take-aways: It takes only fifteen plants in an average 1800 square foot home to green up your indoor air quality!

More about Linda and her books and more can be found at: http://www.dreamitgreen.com/

Call #2

Money Mastery with Chellie Campbell had all the participants get clean with themselves about their attitude and beliefs about money. She taught us some powerful money affirmations and a kick butt technique to help you raise your rates.  I must say that our household has been practicing our money affirmations and we received two unexpected checks in the mail since we began. How inspiring!

One of the biggest take-aways from the call: Say your money affirmations out loud each day and any time you think or say something negative about money, counteract it with TWO inspiring affirmations.

Make sign up for Chellie’s FREE 30 days of money affirmations at: www.Chellie.com

Call #1

Marci Shimoff’s call on being Happy For No Reason was the perfect blend of perspective shifts and tangible tools. We got amazing feedback about this kick off call. I got an email from one  listener saying, “I LOVED it! It was SO GOOD, and so packed with valuable information!”

One of the biggest take-away from the call: In one particular tribe when a tribe member is depressed the shaman will ask the following questions: When did you stop singing? When did you stop dancing? When did you stop sharing? When did you stop being in silence? Remember to sing, dance or move your body, connect and be in silence daily.

More about Marci and her books can be found at: HappyForNoReason.com

On Being a "Mompreneur"

Posted by: Amy | Comments (2)
My 1 1/2 year old, Annabella

My 1 1/2 year old, Annabella

For those of you that are moms, you know it is like becoming a member of a secret society. There is no way to even begin to understand the pressures (or pleasures) of parenthood until you experience it. Before I had my daughter, Annabella, I would roll my eyes when someone said something like that, but truly there is simply no context for it. There is life before being a mom and life after being a mom. You must evolve.

Now couple that with being a business owner.  I marvel at how my days end up–how easy it is to become engrossed in work or my daughter and how easy it is to never be 100% present to either. To instead be half present, always working, always mothering, with everything bleeding together.

I don’t want to live that way. I want to be present and mindful. I want to be a great mom, a “mindful mama” as my mothers support group is called. One of the things that helps is to do my affirmations each day. Here is my latest favorite:

“I am where I am”.

What are your thoughts?
